Hopeless?

The Swashank Redemption is a movie about a man (Andy Dufresne) who is sentenced a life time in prison, innocent. He meets another man in prison and they become friends. Some people have become used to the life in prison, but Andy can’t. Should you lose hope?

An old man in the movie died because he lost hope. He was an elderly and got free because of his age. He never thought that he could get out of prison and lost hope because of that. In the fifty years that he lived in prison, he got used to it. He was somebody, because he was the library man. When he got out he was a nobody and had to work in a supermarket. Because he lost hope over the years he became a stranger of the world outside and committed suicide.

Andy Dufresne never lost hope. His friends in prison could not understand why, cause they were never getting out including Dufresne himself! Dufresne saw what it did to the little old man and claimed to a friend that hope is the only way for not getting insane. With his hope and a little pickaxe he managed to dig a hole in 15 years time. He was a free man in a world that he always kept in mind.

Dufresne's friend learned a lesson of this. His story went the same as the old man that died. He was a stranger of the world outside and had to work in the supermarket. But Dufresne's positivism and plan gave the friend the hope to find him again. It was a difficult search but he did not give up hope and he found Dufresne. Sometimes things in life look hopeless, but there is always a way to get out of that situation.

  1. Hey!
Part of the assignment was to give each other feedback, so here is the first bit.

First of all I would like to say that you created a clear image of the movie. I have the feeling that, even though I have never seen the movie, I now know what it is about.

What I would like to comment though, is that you the text you wrote is a very factual one. It shows exactly what the movie is about, but not what you feel about the movie, what impression it made on you. And that is what I am curious about. Is it a 'must see' movie or should I avoid seeing it?

I hope that you do not think of my feedback as criticism, but as useful feedback.

  2. hey Maryvonne!

Nice how you described this movie, I saw it a couple of months ago and this movie really tells a story. Of course the men in the movie have done some bad things but when you watch the whole movie you feel sorry for them because there is also a story behind the crime they committed. It's really nice how the main character builds up a lot of respect among the other prisoners by just staying relaxed and still have hope for a better future.

Please, if you have the time look at my blog as well!

  3. Hey Maryvonne,

Nice blog about a great movie! As shown in the movie, with a little bit of hope, and luck aswell in the movie, you can achieve great things. I have to say you gave a good summary without really giving away the end.
